A Short Follow-up

My quest for items not Made In China is moving along but at a slow pace. There are so many out there that it really is hard. Clothes and shoes are the hardest to find but it is possible. Taiwan and the Phillipines and the USA have been the majority of my recent purchases. Let me know how your quests are going if you are embarking on something of the same.

I'm still trying to be better about recycling and producing less waster! The cloth napkin thing is going well. As for water, I've become so aware of how much of it just "goes down the drain" wastefully. I've even thought about having a big bucket in the kitchen to put water in that I use to rinse out things. I mean, that water has hardly been touched! Of course, I wouldn't drink it. I would pour it back into the garden or something. That's what I do with the water I use to clean my paintbrushes at the end of the day.
As for buying things, we are saving up for home renovations, so we don't buy anything except for food once a week!

Hate to say it, but I'd almost prefer you buy things from China than Taiwan or the Philippines! Taiwan is basically China anyways (well...its tricky..its kinda like Hong Kong..only Taiwan doesnt want to admit any relationship to China, even though they are technically owned by China) and the Philippines is under a SEVERE militaristic regiem that is so overtly oppressive that over half of the population has to LEAVE the country in order to find work!! (hence all the domestic workers in Hong Kong - and most of the men go to oil fields in the middle east) the factory workers are mostly made up of the children left behind, trying to support their families and their land which can be snatched away at any minute from the nasty Arroyo government (and guess who funds them?) Sorry..guess I've been spending too much time with the Filipino Progressive Party lately. :) but i AM glad that you are beginning to pay more attention to where your products are coming from. its a hard process for sure. did you know that a lot of times, if it was made in the philippines, especially things like beer that is brewed there, among other things, the manufacture won't list it is from the philippines because they are afraid that people will associate their product with the poverty-ridden country, and not buy the product!?

If I'm not mistaken didn't Taiwan revolt and break away from China because of their Communist regime?

they did indeed revolt and try to break away, and they are mostly independent - but they are still considered as part of the Republic of China (kinda like Guam or Puerto Rico - kinda) - they still speak Chinese (Mandarin) - so products from Taiwan are still technically from China. Hope that doesnt spoil your shopping
